In a recent advisory, the United Kingdom government has updated its travel guidance for Nigeria, identifying several states as high-risk due to escalating security concerns. According to the report, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) strongly discourages travel to specific regions in Nigeria, citing ongoing instability and criminal activity. The advisory highlights areas where insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes have intensified, making them unsafe for non-essential visits.

States listed as high-risk include:

• Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe in the northeast, due to persistent Boko Haram and ISWAP activities.
• Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, and Sokoto in the northwest, where banditry and kidnappings are rampant.
• Parts of Niger, Kogi, and Plateau states, which have seen rising intercommunal violence and criminal attacks.

The UK government also cautions against travel to the Niger Delta region—including Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River—due to risks of piracy, militant activity, and civil unrest.

While the advisory does not ban travel outright, it urges travelers to reconsider plans and take heightened precautions if visiting Nigeria. British nationals already in the country are advised to stay informed, avoid high-risk zones, and maintain contact with local authorities and the British High Commission.

The advisory concluded with a reminder: “Be alert and take any security advice given by your hotel, employer or your hosts.”
