The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has extended a heartfelt invitation to Anambra indigenes living outside the state, encouraging them to return in large numbers for the upcoming Christmas festivities.
He described the state as “free and peaceful,” pointing to the recently concluded gubernatorial election—widely regarded as the most peaceful in the state’s history—as proof of the command’s effective security operations.
Speaking on the evening of Sunday, November 9, shortly after the election, CP Orutugu reassured citizens that they can anticipate a secure and joyful holiday season.
Having assumed leadership of the Anambra State Police Command nine months ago, CP Orutugu highlighted that intentional and forward-thinking security strategies have significantly improved safety across the state. In his words, “Anambra is a safe place. Prepare and come home for Christmas.”
Renowned for his grassroots-focused and intelligence-based policing style, the Commissioner has rolled out initiatives centered on crime deterrence, swift intervention, and fostering public trust. He underscored his unique approach of “policing without guns,” stating, “I police not your actions but your emotions by counseling, appealing to your conscience.”
He further explained that his first step was to build strong partnerships with traditional leaders, youth organizations, and religious institutions to promote early intelligence gathering and reinforce public trust in law enforcement. This approach, driven by actionable intelligence, has helped thwart criminal plans and maintain safety across all local government areas.
Reflecting on the effectiveness of his flashpoint deployment model, CP Orutugu assured that all critical areas and border zones are now under comprehensive security coverage.
On the issue of accountability, he emphasized a firm stance against any form of misconduct, corruption, or abuse of authority, reiterating that ethical conduct and human rights remain at the core of policing in Anambra.
He concluded with a strong message of reassurance: “Residents and indigenes returning home for the festive season can expect a visible security presence, rapid response readiness, and a policing system designed to safeguard lives and property. With the combination of community engagement and strategic deployments, Anambra has emerged as a model for peace and security in the region. Through deliberate policing and grassroots engagement, we have maintained peace. Anambra is ready for the festive season. Come home.”
