Nigeria’s music community is mourning the loss of Akiin Shuga, the charismatic leader of the Shuga Band, who reportedly passed away at the age of 50. Known for his electrifying performances and inspiring personal journey, Akiin Shuga leaves behind a legacy that transcends music.

Born Akin Tofowomo, Akiin Shuga was not just a band leader—he was a symbol of perseverance. A polio survivor, he defied physical limitations to become one of Nigeria’s most celebrated live performers. His band, Shuga Band, was a staple at high-profile events, weddings, and corporate functions, known for blending Afrobeat, highlife, and contemporary sounds.

His story inspired many, especially through his advocacy for polio awareness and disability inclusion. He often said, “Polio didn’t stop me. It shaped me.”

A statement from the family, released on November 3, confirms that Akiin Shuga passed away on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.

“He was a guardian of rhythm, tradition, and the soul of live performance. For over thirty years, both on stage and as a mentor, he reshaped the art of band leadership with elegance, skill, and deep purpose. To admirers across Nigeria and beyond, he stood as both a beacon and a legacy—an undisputed master of his craft.

As we navigate this profound loss, we kindly ask for privacy and quiet reflection. We hope for the space to grieve, to celebrate his life, and to find comfort among those closest to him.”

Akiin Shuga was also a philanthropist and motivational speaker. He founded the Shuga Limb Foundation, which supports people living with disabilities and promotes polio eradication. His work earned him recognition from both local and international organizations.

He once told an audience, “Music is my gift, but my purpose is to uplift.”
