Confirmed: CAF clears Ndidi for Super Eagles clash with DR Congo

Wilfred Ndidi has officially been cleared by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to play for the Super Eagles in their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against DR Congo.

For days, uncertainty surrounded Ndidi’s availability after he picked up a yellow card in Nigeria’s 4–1 victory over Gabon, having already been booked earlier in the qualifiers against Benin Republic. Many feared the Leicester City midfielder would miss the playoff final due to card accumulation. However, CAF has now clarified that cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifying rounds do not carry over into the playoff stage. Only confirmed suspensions apply, meaning Ndidi is free to feature in Sunday’s decisive encounter.

The confirmation was shared by the Super Eagles’ media officer, Promise Efoghe, through the team’s official X (Twitter) account. He explained that CAF’s ruling was a major boost for Nigeria, as Ndidi’s presence in midfield provides both defensive stability and creative balance. Head coach Eric Chelle will now have one of his most experienced players available for selection in what is expected to be a fiercely contested match against the Leopards of DR Congo.

Ndidi’s clearance comes at a critical time for the Super Eagles, who have been dealing with off-field distractions, including a recent bonus dispute that briefly disrupted training. With those issues resolved and Ndidi back in contention, the team is expected to be at full strength heading into the playoff final.

Fans have welcomed the news with relief, noting Ndidi’s importance in shielding the defence and linking play between midfield and attack. His ability to break up opposition moves and distribute the ball effectively could prove decisive against a DR Congo side known for its physicality and pace.

As Nigeria prepares for Sunday’s showdown, Ndidi’s availability underscores the team’s determination to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup. For supporters, the message is clear: the Super Eagles will have their midfield anchor on the pitch when it matters most.
