Actress Cynthia Erivo protects Ariana Grande after fan jumps barricade at ‘Wicked’ premiere

At the star-studded Wicked: For Good premiere in Singapore, what was meant to be a glamorous celebration of the highly anticipated film took a dramatic turn when a fan jumped a barricade and lunged at Ariana Grande. In a moment that stunned onlookers, co-star Cynthia Erivo sprang into action, shielding Grande and diffusing the situation before security could intervene.

Grande, who plays Glinda in the upcoming Wicked film, was walking the yellow carpet alongside Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Michelle Yeoh when the frightening encounter occurred. The man, later identified as Johnson Wen—known online as “Pyjama Man” for his history of disruptive stunts—grabbed Grande around the neck after leaping over the barrier.

Without hesitation, Erivo pulled the man’s arm away and placed herself between him and Grande, hugging her protectively as security finally stepped in.

Fans quickly criticized the event’s security team for their slow response, noting that Erivo acted faster than the guards. The incident has reignited concerns about celebrity safety at premieres and public events, especially given Wen’s history of similar disruptions, including rushing the stage at a Katy Perry concert.

Social media erupted with admiration for Cynthia Erivo, with fans dubbing her Ariana’s “fastest bodyguard.” Many praised her instinctive bravery and the bond between the two stars, which shone through in the protective embrace captured on video.

Grande, though visibly shaken, continued the premiere with grace, supported by her co-stars and the cheering crowd.

The man, identified online as “Pyjama Man,” later confirmed in an Instagram Story that he had been arrested but was released shortly after.
