In a major relief for Nigerian football fans, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has confirmed that the team’s recent bonus dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been resolved. The announcement comes just days before Nigeria’s pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa playoff semi-final against Gabon in Rabat, Morocco.
Earlier this week, the Super Eagles made headlines after boycotting a scheduled training session in protest over unpaid bonuses and allowances. The standoff threatened to derail preparations for the high-stakes playoff match, with 23 players reportedly refusing to train on Tuesday.
The dispute centered around outstanding financial commitments, some dating back to previous tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The situation raised concerns about morale and unity within the squad just days before a critical fixture.

Taking to his official X account, Troost-Ekong reassured fans and stakeholders with a succinct but powerful message:
“Issue resolved. We are together and, as before, focused on the games ahead.”
He later added that “Outstanding financials [have been] cleared and on ground. Team is UNITED and focused as before on representing NIGERIA with our maximum for the games ahead.”
This public declaration of unity and resolution has helped restore confidence in the team’s readiness and commitment.
Following the resolution, the Super Eagles resumed full training on Wednesday evening at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat. Head coach Eric Chelle led tactical drills with all invited players present, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Troost-Ekong himself.
The team now shifts focus to Thursday’s semi-final clash against Gabon, with the winner set to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final round of the African play-offs.
