Nigerian Man Arrested After Fatal Stabbing of Father, Injuring Sisters

Authorities in New Orleans, Louisiana, have confirmed that 29-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwuebuka Eweni, is in custody after allegedly stabbing his 75-year-old father, Samuel Eweni, to death and injuring his two sisters during a violent domestic incident.

According to police reports, the attack occurred inside the family’s residence. Investigators say Chukwuebuka fatally stabbed his father multiple times before turning on his sisters, who sustained serious injuries but survived. They were rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently receiving treatment.

Neighbors described the incident as shocking, noting that the family had lived quietly in the area for years. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though detectives are continuing their investigation.

Chukwuebuka was arrested at the scene and is being held in custody pending formal charges. The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office is expected to file charges of second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

This tragic case has drawn attention both in the U.S. and Nigeria, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence and mental health struggles within families. Community leaders in New Orleans have urged residents to seek help when dealing with family conflicts, stressing that violence only deepens the pain.

As the investigation unfolds, the Eweni family is left grappling with the loss of their patriarch and the trauma of the attack.

On Wednesday afternoon, SUNO released the following statement about Samuel Eweni’s death.

“Dr. Eweni was more than an educator—he was a mentor and a guiding light to so many of our students,” said Dr. Joseph Bouie, Jr., Chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans. 

“His contributions to the College of Business and Public Administration and to the university’s mission of transforming lives through education will be remembered and celebrated. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this deeply difficult time.”

The New Orleans Police Department in a statement confirmed that Chukwuebuka Eweni now faces one count of second-degree m8rder and two counts of attempted second-degree m8rder.
