Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has regained his freedom after spending three years in prison. The comic actor was released following his conviction in 2022 on charges related to sexual assault involving a minor, a case that drew widespread attention and divided public opinion across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Baba Ijesha’s ordeal began in 2021 when allegations surfaced that he had molested a 14-year-old foster child of comedienne Princess. The case quickly became one of the most talked-about scandals in Nollywood, sparking heated debates about child protection, justice, and the responsibilities of celebrities as role models. In July 2022, a Lagos court sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, though the terms were to run concurrently, effectively reducing his jail time.
His release after three years has reignited conversations online, with some Nigerians expressing relief that he has completed his sentence, while others remain critical, insisting that his actions should never be forgotten. Videos and photos of Baba Ijesha stepping out of prison have already begun circulating on social media, showing the actor looking visibly older but relieved to be free.

The Nollywood community has reacted cautiously, with many actors choosing silence while others have urged the public to focus on lessons learned from the case. For Baba Ijesha, freedom marks the beginning of a new chapter, though questions remain about whether he will attempt a return to the film industry or live quietly away from the spotlight.
His release underscores the enduring impact of the scandal on Nollywood and Nigerian society at large. It serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability, the power of public scrutiny, and the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable children.
