Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has thrown his support behind the Super Eagles ahead of their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final against DR Congo, but he has also cautioned that the Leopards pose a serious threat.
Rohr, who managed Nigeria between 2016 and 2021, spoke to journalists about the upcoming clash, stressing that while the Super Eagles have the quality to secure victory, they must not underestimate their opponents. “Nigeria has the talent, the experience, and the hunger to qualify for the World Cup. But DR Congo are a strong side, very physical, and they have improved a lot in recent years. It will not be an easy game,” he said.
The Franco-German coach highlighted the importance of discipline and concentration, noting that DR Congo’s recent victory over Cameroon in the semi-final was proof of their resilience. He warned that Nigeria must avoid complacency and remain focused for the full 90 minutes. “One mistake can change everything in a playoff. The Super Eagles must stay compact and take their chances when they come,” Rohr added.

Nigeria advanced to the playoff final after a dramatic 4–1 extra-time win over Gabon, with Victor Osimhen once again proving decisive. However, the suspension of Wilfred Ndidi has left head coach Eric Chelle with a tactical headache in midfield. Rohr acknowledged Ndidi’s absence as a blow but insisted that Nigeria’s depth should be enough to cope.
For Rohr, who guided Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the semi-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the stakes are clear. He believes the Super Eagles must seize the moment to restore Nigeria’s place on football’s biggest stage. “The World Cup is where Nigeria belongs. I hope they can make it, but they must respect DR Congo because they are dangerous,” he concluded.
The playoff final in Rabat promises to be a tense encounter, with both sides eyeing a ticket to the intercontinental playoff tournament in Mexico next March. For Nigeria, Rohr’s words serve as both encouragement and a reminder: talent alone will not be enough without focus and determination.
